We have some very exciting new equipment additions down at Lightship95, our recording studio on a boat permanently moored in the London Docks. The studio’s owner, Ben Phillips has been enhancing his spec with a lot of great new gear

In the control room, there are four new mic pre’s: 2 x AEA TRP’s and 2 x Helios Type 69’s. These are joined by two compressors; a Purple Audio Action 1176 and a Standard Audio Level-Or.

Supplementing the mic pre’s are some fantastic additions to the mic collection: A Neumann U47 Fet, Brauner Valvet X, 2 x Royer 121s, 2 x Neumann KM184s, Sennheiser E902 and E906, and 2 x Gefell MV692s with UM70 capsules.

Lightship95 is an exceptional drum recording room, and Ben has now acquired a Sonnor HiLite 80’s maple drum kit which joins the Yamaha 9000 to give clients two brilliant kits to choose from. The Protools rig has been upgraded with an Intel Apple Mac Pro 2 x 3GHz Dual-Core running Pro Tools 10 and last but not least the studio has acquired a new Radial Active DI-box.

Today we’re heading over to the heart of vibrant and creative East London to shine our spotlight on The Way vintage recording studio. The Way is regarded as one of the finest tracking and mixing facilities in the area and has recently attracted the likes of Mark Ronson, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, The Horrors, Jamie Woon, Tinchy Stryder, The Future Sound of London and Katy B.

Studio A was expertly designed by White Mark acousticians, who also built Real World Studios and The Hit Factory. The control room is based around a beautiful Vintage Custom Neve 8078 that is regularly regarded as one of the most classic and best-sounding tracking consoles ever produced. This particular board was one of the very last Neve 80 series hand-wired desks, and was made in the 1970s ‘era of engineering perfection’. The Neve is joined by some exceptional outboard, including the following:

The Way’s live room is perfect for tracking bands and has a particularly warm, punchy and popular drum sound. The studio’s meticulous design allows the main tracking space to be perfectly positioned in relation to two additional isolation booths, which provide some completely different acoustic options. The Way also offers an affordable Online Mixing service which is perfect for clients working with a tight budget but who do not want to compromise the quality of the mix. This service also allows clients around the world to have tracks mixed on this very rare vintage Neve. Simply send your track in by post or via the web and you can expect a finished mix sent back to you within seven days of payment.

Located in London Fields, The Way is in the thick of the East London action. This is a part of town synonymous with music, art, alternative fashion and fantastic nightlife. 21 years since their debut record, and the first since 2004′s Blue Album, Orbital are back once again with their eighth LP, Wonky, which follows their brilliant live comeback in 2009. A long hiatus has obviously re-energised Phil and Paul Hartnoll who have created a triumphant return to form. Wonky, which features guest vocals from Zola Jesus and Lady Leshurr, was mixed by Flood in Assault & Battery 1.

We’re heading to the Arctic Circle for our next studio launch on The Market Place. Sundlaugin is an amazing recording and mixing studio in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. The studio sits at the point where this hugely cultural city, aka “The Nightlife Capital of the North”, meets the vast stunning landscapes of rural Iceland, with its geysers, volcanoes, snow-covered forests and The Northern Lights providing a level of inspiration like no other.

Sundlaugin Recording Studio was originally built as a swimming pool in the 1930s but was converted into a studio and rehearsal space by iconic Iceland band Sigur Ros in the late 1990s. Time for another introduction to a fantastic Market Place studio. Today’s turn goes to Red Kite – one of the truly inspiring residential recording studios Wales provides. This beautifully-crafted room is designed and run by award-winning producer/engineer Martin Levan.

Located on the borders of the Brecon Beacons national park in central Wales, Red Kite Studio has its own 170acre private estate with peaceful and inspiring surroundings which provide a hugely desirable working environment. Both the live room and control room have high vaulted ceilings and plenty of daylight. One of the highlights of the equipment spec are the Stereo and 5.1 custom designed monitors – Tannoy 10″ dual concentric drivers with subwoofers, Dolby Lake FIR signal processing and Lab Gruppen amplification. Martin has provided some beautiful backline gear and a selection of microphones and amplifiers.

Red Kite Studio provides accommodation that is split between a traditional country cottage and British farmhouse. The residential is situated in a stunning valley with views of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Home-cooked food is provided for clients – you can even fish your own dinner in Red Kite’s lake!

Today it is a pleasure for us to shine our studio spotlight on La Chapelle – a fantastic Belgium recording studio.

La Chapelle is a residential recording studio in the Belgian Ardennes, a region renowned for its beautiful forests, hillsides, nature reserves and ancient stone buildings. It is a world-class facility with one of the biggest and most interesting recording rooms in Europe making it ideal for both bands and orchestral recordings. It’s a new week and we have a whole load more fantastic studios to introduce to you all over the next five days. Monday sees the launch one of the most famous Italian recording studios, Forum Studios – Studio A on Miloco’s The Market Place.

Located in the heart of Rome, Forum Studio A was founded by Ennio Morricone to serve as the ultimate orchestral recording studio. The scores for Once Upon A Time in America, Nuovo Cinema Paradiso and Life is Beautiful are just a handful to have been created here. The 300m sq live room can easily accommodate 80 musicians, and offers limitless acoustic options and Steinway and Yamaha concert grand pianos.
